Francesville is one of Indiana’s best-kept secrets! This rural, close-knit community is nestled in Salem Township on the west side of Pulaski County on HWY 421, approximately 40 miles north of Lafayette and 40 miles south of Interstate 80/90.

The town of Francesville was laid out by James Brooks, president of the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Railroad in 1853. It was named in honor of his daughter, Frances.  (To continue reading about Francesville and its history, click HERE.)

Gazebo Dedication

The gazebo in downtown Francesville was recently dedicated to Darlene Mellon in memory of her decades of service to the Fall Festival and the Francesville community. A plaque honoring Darlene was made, and the family gathered for the dedication.

In memory of Darlene Mellon:
Darlene and Chuck Mellon first moved to the Francesville community in 1980 when Chuck took a job as the assistant principal at West Central. They were both from small communities originally and knew that Francesville would be a good place to raise a family.

Darlene was committed to making her community a better place. She was involved in a number of community organizations including the Fall Festival Committee, the library board, and the Community Foundation. Her servant heart was evident. In her free time, she could often be seen with a trash grabber, doing her part to make Francesville a little cleaner.

After the pharmacy and the IGA closed, Darlene helped to start the Uptown Project, which led to the creation of the Montgomery Mercantile and Opera Block Park. Darlene spent countless hours writing grants for this project and getting others involved in her vision.

To the community, Darlene was an educator, a leader, and a community pillar. But to a few, she was Mom. Her children, and later her grandchildren, became a part of every project and vision Darlene had, from being helping hands during the festival to getting involved in the school community. Darlene instilled in her family not only a servant spirit, but also a God-centered perspective.

As passionate as she was about the community and her family, Darlene was even more passionate about her faith. All that she did for the community she did to honor God in humility. Her faith was magnified through the last several years of her life during her two battles with cancer. Her husband, Chuck, points to Colossians 3:12 as the essence of her character: Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Darlene’s story came to a close in February of this year, but her legacy lives on in this community through her dedication and hard work.

Chuck says, “In all those things she had done, she kind of set the bar high. We still need to keep these things going.”

Historic Downtown Francesville Listed on National Register

The effort to list Francesville’s historic downtown area by the Uptown Project came to fruition when word was received the historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 2, 2025.

Francesville Park Department

The Francesville Town Council has recently explored the possibility of creating a Francesville Park Department.

Although the details of creating the park board are still being determined, one item that has started is gathering names of people who might be interested in being a park board member. The town council will pick the park board members and town's attorney is determining what requirements need to be followed as in party affiliation, residence location, as well as if there is a requirement to have the school system and the local library represented.

If you are interested in being considered to be on the park board, please stop by the town clerk office to let Joelyn know or email your interest to [email protected]

Francesville Fall Festival

The 57th Francesville Fall Festival took place on September 19, 20 & 21, 2025.  By all accounts it was one of the best Fall Festival's in recent memory as record crowds enjoyed beautiful weather and a host of family filled activities in the downtown section of Francesville.

  • Another great Festival in the books, so very thankful for God's Blessings on the weather for the whole weekend. We have so many citizens, businesses, organizations, corporations to thank for their support, without them, it would not be possible to organize and execute a successful event.
  • Thank you also to all who planned and organized all the competitive events and presented the prizes.
  • Thank you to the Fire Department and Medaryville Nursery School for organizing the meals.
  • We loved the Tunnel to Towers Mobile Exhibit and the VAU Dog Tag Memorial Wall and appreciate them.
  • Thank you to all the entertainers who provided music and attractions to the crowds.
  • Thanks also to all those participating in the events and to all who supported these events and the vendor booths on the street.
  • Thanks to all those that attended.  It is so great to live in a wonderful community that attends and supports all local events.
  • Thanks to all who loaned equipment or property and helped set up and tear down and clean the streets and put Francesville back to normal. We appreciate you ALL.
