Uptown Project Receives Grant for Formation of Pocket ParkThe UPTOWN Project, Inc recently received a $20,000 grant from the Community Grants Fund through the Community Foundation of Pulaski County. This grant for the future "Opera Block Park" is intended to move Pulaski County toward its aspiration of becoming a community that is welcoming and open-minded.
UPTOWN Project members look forward to the groundbreaking of this pocket park in Francesville's historic business district between Novotony Insurance and Circle S Farm Solutions. Once complete, visitors may enjoy seating, a small stage for entertainment, artwork, lighting, activities, and other decorative features. The Opera Block Park theme derived from Francesville's rich entertainment history. In 1908, William C Myers, a local real estate broker, constructed a grand theater called the ‘Opera House Block’ located on the corner of Montgomery and Bill Streets. This theater occupied a large portion of the block and was one of the most modern in the state. “It’s seating capacity of 900, stage, dressing rooms designed to accommodate the best road troupes, heating, ventilating, lighting and safety exits conformed to the ideas of the most modern playhouse.” All patrons were guaranteed “ALWAYS A GOOD SHOW” or their money would be refunded. With the help of local businesses, community members, and organizations, the UPTOWN Project is anxious to bring life to a space that has been vacant over 30 years! For more details, check out the full article in the Francesville Tribune. Stay tuned for updates as this exciting project unfolds! |
